Curly Haircut Consultation: What to Discuss
A curl-focused checklist covering shrinkage, shape, density, styling method, and dry finishing.
Arrive in a useful state
Unless instructed otherwise, wear your hair in a clean, dry version of its normal curl pattern with limited heavy product. The stylist needs to see where curls sit, how the crown behaves, and which areas shrink more. A stretched ponytail or tight bun can hide the information needed for shape planning.
Describe the target shape
Use outline words: rounded, elongated, triangular, shaggy, compact, wide, or lifted. Decide whether you want volume at the crown, fullness at the sides, or weight through the bottom. Curl-by-curl cutting alone does not define the result; the overall silhouette does.
Protect perimeter density
Thinning shears and uncontrolled internal removal can create frizz or sparse ends on some curl patterns. Ask how the stylist plans to remove weight and how much perimeter will remain. If you want a shag, confirm the shortest crown layer after shrinkage, not just while the hair is stretched.
Review the home routine
A salon finish may use different products, brush styling, or diffusing than your normal routine. Ask which steps are essential and which simply create the polished appointment result. The best cut should still make sense on the days you air-dry or spend less time styling.
